EMPANGENI-based Spider Mini Cranes SA has embarked on an expansion plan with a new outlet in Johannesburg and sales and marketing support in Durban. It is also looking for locations in Cape Town and Port Elizabeth.
A subsidiary of the B&B Group, the company was established in 2006 and is the sole importer and distributor in Southern Africa UNIC Spider Mini Cranes.
“There is growing demand for these versatile and compact cranes in South Africa’s construction and mining sectors. So much so, that we recently added our second sales, rental and service facility in Harris Avenue in Edenvale, Johannesburg,” said B&B Group CEO Bob Fogg
Fogg said that since the UNIC Spider Mini Cranes business was started in 2006, it had grown mainly by word of mouth.
“The engineers and technicians who have used our cranes would often contact us when they have to perform a difficult lift or to lift something that normal cranes couldn’t do because of space restrictions and access problems.
The compact cranes range from 2.9-ton to 10-ton machines, and many are small enough to fit through doors and into confined construction and mining interiors. “The performance of the cranes in these confined spaces and in highly technical lifting jobs has led to growing demand from industrial clients,” he said.
The cranes are made in Japan and then sent to Europe to have computer and sensor systems installed to meet the highest safety standards. The local business can install additional safety equipment including fire suppression and exhaust-spark arrestors for users.
“The Johannesburg branch is a big step forward for the B&B Group, but we will continue to grow and plans for even more expansion are already underway,” Fogg said.
