EC youth get a chance to explore maritime careers

HIGH school pupils, students and the public got the chance to explore the world of career opportunities in the oceans economy at the Dive In! Maritime Career Exploration expo at the East London ICC today, Wednesday, 4 September 2019.
The expo and interactive displays showcased the wide variety of study and career opportunities in and around the oceans - from seafaring, sailing and ship-building, through to engineering, aquaculture, marine biology, scientific research, and emergency services.
Interactive experiences included exploring boats, watching a shark dissection and a SA Police Services patrol boat drill.
Exhibitors include companies such as African Marine Solutions (AMSOL), Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC), Damen Shipyards, Grindrod Shipping, and Legacy Marine, along with Transnet National Ports Authority, SA Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA), the KZN Sharks Board and East London Aquarium.
Education and training institutions including Rhodes University, Nelson Mandela University, University of Fort Hare and Buffalo City College will showcase their maritime-related courses, along with related sector education and training authorities (SETAs).
Getting the exclusive opportunity to go on a tour of the Port of East London ensures that young visitors get first-hand experience of oceans economy which, according to the government, has the potential to contribute one million jobs in South Africa by 2033.
The expo also was a platform to launch a national Maritime Awareness Programme aimed at growing the South African maritime culture and pride in the country’s oceans environment. The national campaign, with the theme “Dive In”, is driven by the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI), in partnership with a team of maritime stakeholders from the public and private sector.
The multi-stakeholder task team was created to work collaboratively towards achieving the common goals of promoting maritime education and training, as well as exponential job creation and growth within the oceans economy, said SAIMI acting CEO Odwa Mtati.
“This national maritime awareness campaign is intended to raise consciousness that South Africa IS a maritime nation and by growing awareness of the opportunities for careers, employment, business, upliftment of communities, we aim to grow participation in the oceans economy and position South Africa as Africa’s leading maritime nation,” Mtati said.
A stakeholder engagement session defined and outlined the purpose of the maritime awareness and activation activities forming part of the national campaign. It offered a platform for all stakeholders to drive the maritime agenda and provide relevant support, both provincially and nationally.
The multi-stakeholder task team, which is led by SAIMI, includes representatives from the SA Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA); the Transport Education and Training Authority (TETA); the departments of Labour; Higher Education, Science and Technology; Basic Education; Transport; Public Works; Environmental Affairs, Forestry and Fisheries; Government Communications and Information Services; Tourism; the SA Police Service; and the National Skills Fund.
